Elevated in Hamburg

Hamburg gave us quite a shock. Ashley and I flew directly from a warm, 18-degree Athens to what felt like the sub-zero depths of winter in Hamburg! There was no drop in the beauty levels, however.

This city has given birth to two of the classical music greats, among others, and calls them its ‘sons’: Brahms and CPE Bach. Yet another remarkable hall and I was happy to be in good company with Nicolas Alstaedt, who was the other cellist to perform the Franck sonata that season.

The elevator in the hall left a lasting impression on both of us: a piece of architectural memorabilia, over a century old, with beautiful a richly ornamented mirrors and a velvet couch. They just don’t make things like this anymore!
